Punk: Youth and The World

Punk has been around for more than 30 years, since 1977. It all basicly started around the same time period, however it started in different places. The two biggest movements is in the United Kingdom and the U.S. The UK scene brought great artist like Subhumans, The Sex Pistols, G.B.H. Charged, UK Subs, and many more. The US gave birth to equally great bands such as The Dead Kennedies, Black Flag, Lower Class Brats, Operation Ivy, The Casualties, and the name that will never die The Ramones.

Their can be arguments on which country start punk. But in reality it doesn’t fucking matter who started what. Because all punk rock enthusiast, such as myself, come from different backgrounds but have the same passion for music and a place they can go to and feel at home. Whenever I feel that I’m too stressful or need to get away from my problems for one night I catch a Berkeley show. The moshpit helps me release my stress, anger, anxiety, and any other bottled up feelings. All punks come from the same back ground and families, either lower or middle class. The class outsider is attrarted to the scene becaue its a scene where you are accepted no matter how you look. The only requierment is that you have to like the music.  You can find punk anywhere around the world. To my knowledge, Mexico, US, UK, Italy, Germany, Canada, Japan, China, Korea, Australia, Russia. The typical punk would be described as having skinny jeans, a leather or denim studded jacket with patches, convers shoes, Dr. Martins boots, Creeper shoes, bullet belts or studded belts, lots of animal and plaid print, dyed hair, mohawks, spiky hair, and tattoos. A large majority of punks are what you call a DIY, Do It Yourself, this just means that you buy a jacket and you put what you want on it, you can make your own patches or even draw your own logos on to your jacket. But in reality you don’t have to look or wear the punk uniform to be punk. It’s an attitude. Its about not giving a shit and standing up for your beliefs. But in reality punk is your own definition. Its not as simple as a dictionary deffiniton. You have to eat, breath, and live in the punk world to understand it.

I chose this topic because it’s what I am. Punk is very important to me because it’s my background, it helps me to be different from others. I wanted to share some of my views and some history of underground music. I can relate this topic to social change because the attitude that a punks gives can be very inspirational. One of the biggest concepts of punk is “just do it” Henry Rollins of Black Flag believes that Nike got its slogan from punk. To just do it means either you live your life to the fullest while you still can. Thats one of my personal beliefs. I want to do many things and go to many countries as I can because each day might be out last and you might as well make it a great day every day.
